MITOCHONDRION – Antinumerology (EP – 2013)
Genre: Black/Death Metal
Label: Dark Descent Records
Rating: 8/10

The opening number, “Insummation,” has a riff in the first verse which makes me recall Void Meditation Cult, namely their track “Consecrated by Sacrifice” (specifically around the 2:00 mark). Don't misunderstand me – they are two completely different bands, just a similarity in chords chosen. And this, in my opinion, is a good thing, because that VMC riff rules, and so does the Mitochondrion one. After a mid-paced verse, the song opens up to a very fast, clean, I daresay somewhat technical (for this genre) sequence of riffs. “137/Antinumerology” is like a swift, brutal execution. You see it coming, you know there's no way to avoid it, and you stand there; it surely annihilates you.

The production on this EP is glass-clear, and the guitar tone is nice and creamy. There is much dissonance and darkness to be had here. I actually prefer it to Parasignosis, and I wish there was more here, but I'm sure we'll see another full length from them in the not-too-distant future. Recommended!

You can buy it digitally, as I did, from Dark Descent's Bandcamp, or you can purchase the 7” from DDR's webstore.
